delinquent account scam
I have financial power of attorney for my adult daughter who is overseas in a war zone. She has several accounts at a department store, the phone company and a cable company that were not paid and are shown on her credit report as closed accounts and written off almost 7 years ago at negotiated amounts less than owed. However, I have noticed that each of these accounts has recently been sold to multiple debt collection agencies, and now we are receiving notices in the mail advising that if she doesn't pay, they will refile with the credit reporting agencies and that the 7 year time frame will start over.
This doesn't seem legal since the debts were considered taken care of by the original creditor, and so how come a new collection agency can come in and claim they are owed the original amount? What recourse do we have? Should we pay the new collection agencies, or just ignore their threats?
