It is difficult to have a complete eradication of mail order scams. However, if one is to follow a few protective measures, then mail order scams can be curbed to a fair bit.
• Beware of exaggerated or vague claims about products or unusually low prices in advertisements. • Keep a complete record of your order, including a copy of the advertisement, the company’s name and address, date of order and a photocopy of all cheques or money orders. • A legitimate company should send you a list of customers in your area upon request. Take feedbacks from these people on the reputation of the company. • Check the merchandise for any faults that might be present, immediately after arrival of the product. Try to return defective items. • Do not believe all newspaper advertisements. • Avoid sellers that only accept cash payments. • As far as possible, make payments using credit cards only. |
