Default Costa Coffee Scam

I applied for a job on Careerbuilder, and this is what I got...the whole Costa Coffee thing.
They sent me a check, and want me to send it to a lady in IN. That doesn't make sense to me. Why didn't they just send it directly to her, and by-pass me?
Anyway. I told my "boss" that I wasn't going to send the check without the proper contact information. She cursed at me, and told to just do what I was told (I have all of this in an email). I told her to forget it, and that I didn't work for her.
She threatened me with a letter from the courts (which I told her I would notify my attorney), and now, my question or concern here, is what do I do with the check that I received?
Do I hold on to it?
Do I just tear it up? Do I turn it in to someone?
I need to know what to do to help stop these jerks.
Any advice is welcomed.
Thanks!

Take it to the Better Business Bureau? Or what? I don't think the cops can do anything, do you?

Default Report?

@j777,
I do not know if the BBB can do anything as it originates in another country!
I am not in the USA so I have little experience of the BBB.
A phone call to them could find out if they are in a position to offer any assistance.

As you say the cops would probably not do anything, but this will cover you if they are investigating this scammer, following a possible complaint by another victim! and if this leads to you then you would want to be in the clear!

We have read reports of victims being jailed for trying to pass these dud cheques! even though they were obviously a victim not a scammer!
Not a happy outcome!

Although the risk is small it would be wise to cover yourself!

Unhappy Chatting with a "Costa Coffee online recruiter"

Aloha all,

Beware - these "costa coffee" employees are now chatting online!

I started chatting with "Robert Cooper (rocooper88 on yahoo)" a few months back. He says he's an online recruiter looking for ppl in the US to collect customers' payments where they'll earn 10% of each transaction. Most ppl living in Hawaii struggle to make ends meet and this offer seemed far too easy & too good to be true, so I kept telling him that I wanted to find out more about his company so I can make an informed decision about applying. He just kept spitting out the same info that you all received in those emails. He then sent me this very unprofessional MS-Word application and couldn't even tell me the history of his company. Whenever I would tell him that I just wanna make sure this offer is legit & legal, he would get mad and tell me that it's not mandatory & just forget about it. Now that I've read all of your postings, I'm really glad I didn't send him any personal info.

It's not bad enough that we get junk mail from the post office and spam in our email, but now we're getting human spam while chatting! What's next??

Default Chatting with a "Costa Coffee online recruiter" pt. 2

I forgot to mention that he told me I would have to deposit the payments into my account as well as open an e-Trade account. Whoever heard of a new employee having to do all that for an established company?

Talking Comments From A Newbie

Though, not a newbie to scam emails. Ignoring common sense and advice from various and sundry experts, I've been scambaiting the email scammers since 2000. A number of my scambaits from June 2005 to current can be found at Skunkfeathers

One of which I scambaited was Costa Coffee, which sent me their nonsense in June. Over a period of three weeks, I toyed with Mr. Dean John of Costa Coffee, culminating in a "Son of Cheeseburger"-like telephone exchange, and receiving four of his fraudulent money orders in the mail (now trophies, since MoneyGram, Wal-mart and my local authorities didn't want 'em). He (Dean John, or whoever he really is) don' like me vewy much

If you'd like to read the Costa Coffee series, just visit the blog noted above and look for the "Coffee Barf" series (Coffee Barf, and Coffee Barf II-IV).

Cool

dear Jaemi
You may google yourself the Costa Coffee Company which according Wikipedia is
HTML Code:
Costa Coffee is a coffee house company based in the United Kingdom founded in 1971 by Italian brothers Vilas Costa, as a wholesale operation supplying
.
If you are speaking for the same company you have no problem (check if contacting details are the same) because many times scams use real names or firms to scam innocent people.

you may also look at Costa Coffee
