Default What are my responsibilities, if any, re suspicions of fraud

I worked for a firm for four and 1/2 days. I was discussing wages and was informed that I would be receiving a check for the total amount of hours worked period. When I inquired would I receive a 1099, so I could pay taxes as an independent contractor, the owner told me no. He told me I had no responsibility technicly to pay income taxes and in the US you do not have to pay taxes, just write exempt, if ever filling out a job app.

I said no I wanted to pay taxes, particularly social security and medicare, and as much taxes as possible as nearing ss age to collect. I had discussions w/this gentleman before two years ago, and he was telling me about how he was not paying for anyones social security, or medicare, basicly I understand his views, he is a tax protestor, and is not alone in his point of view.

After four days I left, feeling uncomfortable, and obviously getting some flack from this gent. The manager confirmed it was a job that was invisible, I'm using transparent words here, though it may sound like a pun. I asked for a business card, they had none. They had no Workmans Comp, or legal advisements on the wall. People trained here and then work at home.

Do I have any responsibility to report this company? It is pretty obvious to me of what he is doing, but I don't know for sure, and if I wanted to pay taxes I could make some arrangements on my own. I checked workmans comp laws, and you could be self insured, but it requires documentation, and submission to the state, and appoval, when I asked mngr, I was told didn't have any, but I do not know.

Do I have any responsibility re this situation, w/o actual knowledge, just strong instints?

Thank You to anyone who replies.

Thank you. I just don't think it is fair, with an aging society, and no health insurance in the U.S. till age 65, if you live that long, and it is limited i.e. medicare.

There is a growing anti-social security movement here, but Mr. Bush was unsuccessful in his efforts to get the legislation passed. Trying to link social security to capitalisim, like large corporations were able to do with 401k's doing away w/pensions, which are almost non existant in the U.S. now unless you work for a government agency. The recent slide and economic crisis, which could go global, I hope is a lesson to not replace social security w/further programs drawing, and forcing workers to rely on the stock market for a pension. Enron, and now Bear Stearns, are lessons, I hope for younger generations, to not ride the coat tails of the wealthy and priviledged classes, a European social model replacing this movement of privitization of our futures hitched to who knows what next will happen to my investments. One should not have to worry about a stock in old age and illness.

I'll do my homework. Thanks again for the motivation.
