Internet Scams
Generally speaking Internet scams are any type of fraudulent scheme that uses one or more components of the internet, like chat rooms, email or web sites, in order to target and contact possible victims, conduct illegal transactions, or to transmit illicit profits gained from online scams. Online scammers try to take advantage of the internet's unique capabilities to carry out various types of fraudulent schemes on a global scale more quickly than was possible with many fraud schemes in the past.
There are many types of inter-net scams. Email scams, which solicit money via email contact, are the most common, but other scams exist. Market manipulation schemes manipulate securities markets for their personal profit. In 'pump-and-dump' schemes, for example, scammers cause dramatic price increases in the stocks of shell companies with false information, then immediately sell off their holdings of those stocks for a profit before the stock price falls. Other buyers of the stock become victims of the scheme once the price drops. |
