Thousands of people save money by becoming members of various “cost clubs” which allow them to by in bulk from franchise outlet. Some of these organizations, however, are less than ethical and do not provide significant savings for their members, who may even stand to loose money due to their association with them. Many claim that Direct Buy falls into the latter category.
Critics say that potential members are contacted via e-mail or telemarketer and invited to an “open house”. When they visit the showroom you are assigned to a 'members advisor' who give a scripted presentation. Those who wish to join sign the contract (disclaims all warranties on items purchased, states that they give no refunds, among other things) for a number of years (2 is common), and buy a membership, often for over $2000, all without any knowledge of the actual merchandise in the Direct Buy catalog.
Those who feel that there they have been prey to a Direct Buy scam say that hidden fees and charges negate any real benefit to the discounts they received from the company.
