PayPal Scams
A fairly recent internet scam is aimed at PayPal account holders. The scammer’s goal is harvesting PayPal account numbers, passwords and credit card data The online scam works by sending PalPal customers e-mails, sometimes slugged 'URGENT: PayPal Account Update', that claim that they need to re-enter their credit card data because they had some trouble with one of their computer systems.
These con artists also try to entice users by claiming that they will not be required to pay anything for the next 2 incoming transfers as a gift for the inconvenience of having to re-enter the data.
PayPal scams are becoming ever more sophisticated. Sometimes they come in the form of HTML e-mails complete with counterfeited PayPal logos and typefaces. They also offer Web links to sites that contain mocked-up security symbols. Alert targets will notice, however, that the Web site addresses are slightly different from that of PayPal.com.
