Default CraigsList scammer

A lady was advertising her car for sale on Craigs List (Detroit, Michigan) for a ridiculously low price. It was a 2006 Honda Odyssey, fully loaded for $2900. I thought it was a misprint and expected her to reply as such (I was thinking it was really $12900, which was still a good deal). She responds stating that she IS selling the car for 2900, which she received in a divorce settlement and has no use for. I ran the VIN through Carfax and find she is in Florida. I had a few days off of work and thought I would fly down there and buy the car, spend a few days, then drive it back. I tell her so in an email (at this point we are only communicating via email). She responds that she would prefer to transact this through ebay secure pay.
I kept sending her emails to call me, and she responds that she has no phone. She sends me what appears to be an ebay page to submit payment. I insisted I woud fly down the very next day and still pay her the 2900 (she was offering to ship the car, which would cost 500). I knew it was a scam. I called ebay, as she was posing as an ebay seller. You think they cared? I was constantly transferred to a voicemail system. Here I had someone in the middle of perpetrating a fraud and they did not care. I told this to the operator that answered at ebay. Finally called the police inthe city where the car was registered and gave them the VIN. They told me the car was not registered to this 'Lorena Johnson' but to someone else. They thanked me and said they were going to inform the old owner.
Incidentally, after I first made contact with this 'Lorena Johnson' the car was removed from CraigsList (he/she must of thought they found a victim). I googled the VIN and found the same listing on Craigs List in Miami, from two weeks previous.

Read the following link about arrest of a Craigslist scam

http://consumerist.com/343963/filing-a-police-report-on-craigslist-scammer-leads-to-his-arrest

This is the reason that I always advice to make report to police or other law enforcements.
Law never sleeps, may be work slow, but never forgets

THE SAME THING HAPPENED IN NEWPOR, RHODE ISLAND.
Same story, only the car was a 2004 Honda Accord, selling for $2,900. I too sent an email thinking the price was wrong (missed the 1 in $12,900). Obviously a great deal - but way off from Kelly Blue Book. I sent an email and received the same thing about secure pay and ebay. I ended it there. I sent an email stating No Thank you. The name used in our email correspondences was Marcela Suarez, aka Marcy. I also went back on craigslist and the posting was gone. Luckily I sent it to a friend in an email and have some proof, but not much. BUYER BEWARE.

Cool

Dear SMD1981

Welcome to this forum.
It is usual practice of scams to keep a text and change only sender's name and e-mail address (always free-email).

Default Same scam on Long Island and Staten Island

Same woman it seems posting on Craigslist for a 2006 Jetta TDI, same price too. I guess dumbbell doesn't realize that she should at least be making the price somewhat close to what the car is really worth.

Here is the e-mail she sent me.

From: Cynthia Harper (cynthia.harper22@gmail.com)
Sent: Sun 2/10/08 10:07 AM
To: xxxxxxxxxxx (xxxxxxx@hotmail.com)

First of all I want to thank you for your interest for my car. The car has 19,000 miles. I am selling it at this price ($2900) because I just finished the divorce with my husband. When the divorce has finished i own this car. Now as a woman i don't need it. This car is in excellent working condition, no scratches, flaws or any kind of damage, slightly used in 100% working and looking conditions and comes with a clear title, 3 months transferable warranty.
From the beginning you have to know that for the payment I request only secure pay, I prefer the payment to be done using eBay services.
We will use a safe payment method because I am affiliated at eBay and I have a purchase protection account for $20,000. The final price that I want for this car is $2900 US including shipping and handling.
If you are interested in buying it please provide me your full name and address so I can initiate the deal through eBay.
I will wait your answer(if you are interested to buy) very soon.
Cynthia

I figured I'd bait her to at least waste some of her time. Plus I love seeing what these idiots say to questions like "I don't understand why you want to use a service you have to pay a fee for when I am willing to pay cash. It doesn't matter to me though since I can use my credit card and get points through them."

I hope the scammer is reading it on a blackberry, gets excited at the possibility of someone falling for it and drives into a tree!!!!

Cool

Dear day1750

Welcome to this forum.
Seems half of such scams are coming from a divorce to excuse the low price.
But I advice you not to contact with a scam again.
Many times becomes extremelly dangerous. Read about in main page articles about "Dangers from Nigerian scams".

Default Mercenary - Thanks

Thanks for the warning. I actually use no personally identifiable information in my e-mails to the scammer - false first/last name and the e-mail doesn't link back to me at all. I'm also on a municipal wi-fi connection, so I'm pretty much protected there.

I will read the "dangers" thread. I did have some problems finding it through the search feature. What is the easiest way to get to it?

Default 2900$ Car scam, Craigslist & EBAY

So i went online today and there was a posting for a jeep 2004 in great condition with only 90k miles selling for 2900! Wow what a deal right !? I asked if it was a typo and here is what my seller is telling me....

Hello,

First of all I want to thank you for your interest for my car. I sell at this price($2900) because i just finished the divorce with my husband. When the divorce has finished I own this car. Now as a women i don't need it because it is a big car for me and I need money for other things. This car is in excellent working conditions, no scratches, flaws or any kind of damage, slightly used in 100% working and looking conditions and comes with a clear title. From the beginning you have to know that for the payment I request only secure pay, I prefer the payment to be done using eBay services. As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay's Buyer Protection Program in order for me and you to be 100% protected. The final price that I want for this car is $2900. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.

Best Regards,

Nadine..

sounds pretty good huh??

Then....
Hi again,

Miles 90647 ,VIN 1J8GW48S84C290611

nadduf - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The car is already at the shipping company in Philadelphia, PA ,sealed and ready for the shipping. I have a contract with eBay so this deal must go through them.According with the eBay you have 5 days from the time you receive the car to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not.
Here is how it will work:
1.First of all I will need the following details from you:
- Full Name
- Full Shipping Address
2. After I will receive the details from you, I will forward them to eBay.
3. After they will process your info, they will send us both invoices. The invoice will send you the details on how to make a refundable payment.
4. eBay will contact me and I will ship the car to you. After you receive the car you will have 5 days to test, verify and do whatever you need to the car. If you will buy, then I will receive the payment details from eBay so that I can pick up the money.
5. If you will decide that you will not buy the car, eBay will refund the money and I will have the shipping company come pick up my car. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.
Best Regards,

Nadine dufresne

Ok so be sure to find the major 3 elements in common....

1) outrageous price.
2) Gmail account for email address
3) requests ebay for payment

Good Luck
