Hi All,
I couldn't find anything about this in the archives, so I wanted to post to see if this is legal. As opposed to email, this came as snail mail. Letter from Old Mutual Insurance Company saying that we've won $900,000.00 as part of a lottery. They don't specify where the lottery is drawn and enclosed a check! The check is made out for $4,878 and they are asking for us to deposit the check and then transfer $2900 of it to them to pay a non-resident government service fee. They have people in Ireland or South Africa to transfer the money to and include this 800 number 1-800-343-1932. Naturally I'm skeptical. Does anyone have any information on this and if it is a scam? If you need more info like claim number or anything like that, let me know. And it is signed by Franklin Pierce or Perce, but in text below the signature it says Franklin Pedro. Any help is appreciated. John |

To jriker2880:
You've received a counterfeit check, and there is no win. If you deposit the check then wire the $2,900 without waiting for it to clear, you will owe the bank that amount when the check bounces. You will be charged with Check Fraud if you don't repay the $2900. Before you leave 419legal, I suggest you read Be Aware & Beware in General Scam & Spam Discussions as well as Ruined Lives in General 419 Fraud Discussions.
