Hi. I own a classified advertising site in the UK. A site member recently brought to my attention the fact that someone was selling an item on my site and claimed they were an authorised seller of my company.
To cut a long story short I am now posing as a potential buyer of this item and am in communication with the seller. We have progressed to the point that he has provided me with an invoice with my company name on it . The invoice states that the sale is protected by my company and that he has £x,xxx lodged with my company in case a refund is necessary. He is asking for the money to be paid by Western Union which of course is a scammers first choice!I am not sure of the location of the supposed seller. The IP adress registered with my site is showing him as using AOL from New York. The IP address on his emails shows him located in Romania. Basically he is ready to commit an offence by trying to defraud me of a substantial amount of money. I am unsure as to whether using my company name on a spoof invoice constitutes identity fraud as my company address isn't showing. He has used my logo though. So who do I report this to? Is there a specialist branch of the UK police as I can't find any info. I did ring the Met Police for advice but they didn't bother calling me back. I really want this person found and prosecuted. Wishful thinking maybe but I have him dangling on a hook ready for the taking!!

@Inhiding, This is a very difficult one.
One thing you can look at is banning his ip on your site and posting a warning about him on there. The urge to have him put in jail will be strong as he has in effect stolen your hard work! I cannot talk for the police but I cannot see them actually doing anything, as the guy is in another country and would most likely be using false details etc. You can report him to the email provider and get his email closed down, but he can open another one in five minutes!! If you have the time you can Bait him (using a safe email ) and waste his time and money by having him make a lot of trips to the WU office! There are sites that will show you how to do this if you wanted to. Unfortunately I cannot see you being able to get Justice in the normal way of things, as it is almost impossible to first of all find the real criminal and then to prosecute him! You can pm me if you would like to discuss things a bit more!

Hi. Sorry for the delay in replying. Been busy reeling him in
. An update is that I have phoned my local police force today who have taken the details and given me an incident no. They are going to pass it on to the dept that deals with internet crime then contact me for more details. I have no doubt it will come to nothing but its worth a try.I was ripped off myself for £1000 on Ebay last year so am keen to try and stop it happening to others. The guy that ripped me off is on the police wanted register. I have a CCJ against him but not sure if I can name him. Oh bugger it, he's called ALEX SUMMERS from Ifield, Crawley. Feel beter now

Well I am disgusted! The police have informed me that they think this is a civil matter and that I should report this to my ISP. What this has to do with my ISP is beyond me!!
Had a bit of a row with the copper and accused them of only being interested in internet child pornography which they seem very keen to deal with. The rest of us running internet businesses appear to have no protection at all. Waiting for one of their supervisors to call me back. The FBI seem to take internet fraud seriously so why don't the British police???

Updating myself again!
After my barny with the local police I spent an hour on the phone to BT trying to get a difinitive answer as to whether they could investigate. Of course the answer was no, this is a police matter .Rang the police back to be told that they had been trying to get through to me to let me know that the girl I spoke to had made a mistake. I should never have been told that it was a civil matter and that they are taking the matter seriously. I can expect a visit from an officer in the next couple of days to take a statement. Hurrah!
