Lately I have been receiving spam with my own email address in the from field. How do I make this stop? Is it possible that others are receiving this spam with my name on it?
Thanks for your help. |

@savantcreative, welcome to 419legal, The first step would be to contact your email provider and tell them of your concerns!
Next step would be to do a virus scan, some one may have hacked into your computer! I do not know which anti-virus you are using, but there is a good one called AVG that is free! AVG Free - Download antivirus and antispyware software for Windows XP and Vista If you search on the AVG site also look for what is called an (Anti root kit) Download and run, as this will check to see if you have a keylogger on your pc! It is possible to send emails FROM yourself TO yourself but this is usually a deliberate action on your part, your post does not seem to suggest this. I would think the chance of someone else using your emails is high! can you check in your 'sent' box and see if there are any emails that have been sent that you are unaware of? The most obvious thing to do meanwhile is to CHANGE your password!! and then change it again in a short time, you cannot change it too many times especially if you suspect your security has been compromised!

Thanks for your reply. I will call my hosting company tomorrow as this only applies to one of my domains. I am running Trend Micro Internet Security which is supposed to be pretty good. I have not seen and sent emails that weren't sen be me. When I receive them, they don't seem to originate from here.
What password are you referring to? What do think? Thank you- |

@savantcreative, The password I was referring to is your password you use to log into your email account.
If you use a password to log in to your computer then it is a good idea to change this as well! If there is ANY doubt about your pc security then please alter ALL your passwords. IF a keylogger has been placed on your computer then the hacker will have access to EVERYTHING on your pc! as it will record ALL your keystrokes! If you have a password to log onto your pc then please change this with your modem disconnected or turned off. If the emails do not seem to originate from your pc, then check them carefully to see if they are a little bit different to your email? as In "john smith@xxx or john.smith@xxx

@scammerslammer, Thanks. Do you still recommend that I download AVG even though I am running Trend. Trend has real time spyware monitoring that I have set on max. If I do download AVG, do I need to disable Trend to run it?
Thanks again. |

@savantcreative, Spyware/malware is different from say a keylogger and your trend may or may not pick up certain hacking attempts, I have not used trend so I do not know if it is compatible with AVG, ( I am using Nortons) but you can try it! If it conflicts then disable trend while you run av and then you can set it to working again after.
If you can use the anti root kit from AVG this would be good! It would be a good idea to check for updates with trend and then run a full scan. In your case where there is a question as to whether your pc security has been compromised, then you need to take action to maintain your security!
