ATM Scams
ATM scams are on the rise, and the use of online information has made it one of the easier inter-net scams to pull off for any moderately technically proficient con artists.
It works like this: certain ATM models have had their manuals posted online. These can be easily located simply by using a search query. The manuals explain how to switch ATMs into diagnostic mode, where it’s possible to reprogram ATMs to dispense more money that the scammer has in the account. The thieves would still need a PIN code in order to be able to access functions normally only available to installation engineers, but manuals often list typical factory-set default passwords. Unless machines have been carefully programmed, they are vulnerable to tampering.
To make themselves harder to trace, these thieves may use a pre-paid debit card to make withdrawals. Hacked ATMs often dispense incorrect amounts until they are reprogrammed. |
