Emails Scams

There are a number of different inter-net scams to watch out for, but the most commonly encountered are email scams. In many scams the con men claim that money is required to release a larger amount; this is a common tactic of internet lottery scams that promise substantial (and unsolicited) lottery winning.
Phishing is another widely used online internet scam. The scammers send targets official-looking emails from large internet banking and online services like PayPal or eBay asking that the target 'confirm' personal details, including credit card information, which is then used or sold to other criminals.
Auction scams use eBay online autions to cheat victims out of money or property, especially with so-called '2nd Chance Offers' on auctions that the target didn't win.
Various on-line employment scams exist, from pyramid schemes to cash advance scams. Some 'jobs' involve processing international payments that are actually money laundering operations using fake checks. |
