IRS Email Scam
The IRS Email Scam is an online scam in which the victim receives an email that claims to be from the IRS. This is a “phishing” scheme used by identity thieves to steal a victims financial accounts, run up charges on the victim’s existing credit cards and obtain a host of services or benefits in the victim’s name.
The fraudulent email tells the recipient that he or she is eligible to receive a tax refund for a given amount, but to access a form for the tax refund, the recipient must use a link contained in the e-mail. The link directs them to a site that requests personal information, such as Social Security number and credit card information.
Any unsolicited request for this information is suspicious. The IRS doesn’t ask for this type of personal identifying or financial information by e-mail, and taxpayers do not have to complete a special form to obtain a refund. |
