Poetry Scams
|
|
Would be authors are vulnerable to a very specific type of inter-net scam, called online publishing scams or poetry scams. In this scam authors are asked to submit their work to a “contest”. Then promotional materials lead participating writers to believe they have reached the “semi-finals”, and that their poems were selected because of their quality; in fact virtually all submissions advance to the “semi-finals”.
Scammers make money from the prospective authors by encouraging them to spend money on copies of the compilation books, online courses, tickets to the poetry conventions, or publishing fees.
Theses sites sometimes actually publish the writer’s work (at exorbitant prices to the author) claiming that the resultant books are available at 'major bookstores'. The authors will soon find that attempts to purchase these books from major retailers generally fail.
Sites who engage in this activity are often very adept at staying on the right side of the law, while simultaneously using unethical and misleading practices |
