Vector Marketing Scam?
|
|
A group called Students Against Vector Exploitation (SAVE) claims that Vector Marketing is, essentially, a scam
Vector Marketing is a company in the United States that sells Cutco kitchen knife sets with in-home demonstrations. Students make up a substantial number of their recruits. SAVE members maintain that they were encouraged to sell to their family and friends to start out, but then had to rely on referrals, which can be difficult to obtain.
Workers are hired as independent contractors, but must follow strict rules as to whom they can sell to and how to give the presentation. Additionally, they must either buy or put down a deposit for $145 for a demonstration knife set. There are also conferences that they must pay to attend.
The co-founder of SAVE recently won a case with the NY Dept. of Labor alleging that Vector breached the independent contractor- client relationship making her an employee. Vector was required to send her a check to compensate her work during unpaid training. |
