Ebay scams are yet another manifestation of the “account information verification” online scam. The scammers send their target an email with the eBay logo (sometimes they even include links to the actual eBay User Agreement and Privacy Policy page for extra verisimilitude). The email claims that eBay is requires the target to go to their Web site and fill out the required information, such as credit card numbers and other personal financial information. Various reasons are given for this, all of them bogus.
There are a number of red flags to watch out for when spotting inter-net scams of this kind. Any email asking you to verify your account information is one flag. Another is if the URL you're being directed to begins with http:// instead of https:// (the extra 's' stands for (“secure”). In these situations it’s best to go directly to the site rather than using the offered link, then contact the admin to ask if the request is legitimate.
