Default Credit Collector

First of all, I do not know anything, and never had to deal with credit report. But it seems I have to now.

I have received a letter from a credit collector named Asset Acceptance LLC, they are telling me I owe them around $300. I have called them to have more details, and they told me I owe this money from 2001 when I was leaving in California. Since we are in 2009 I'm surprise. I read a little and the SoL of California is 4 years only.

More over I've check my credit report with the 3 bureau and the only one mentioning this company is Experian, the name appears in the Inqueries Shared Only with you. The company doesn't show in the Credit Items. and they do not show at all on Equifax and TransUnion

What should I do ? Pay or Not pay ? Let it die, or send them a letter ?

Thanks for you help

I'm afraid that if you have had any credit problems at all, this will become the new norm for you. The first thing you need to do is verify the debt in writing. Have them send you a statement, allot of the time this in itself clears it up because they have none. They are required by the FTC to send one. Also try to obtain their mailing address so that you can send a cease and desist letter to them to end collection calls. No matter what, DO NOT PAY over the phone, through the mail, or money orders unless you are absolutely sure that it is the ORIGINAL creditor. If it is not you might as well give me your money because the bad debt that got their attention is still going to be on your report. Once your original debtor charges you off, they usually will not take your money as they have already been compensated for it through insurance. The vultures/collectors, view thousands of reports and pick the ones with flags on them to try and scam money from. Then they pack up their crap and change locations and names with your money. Good luck, and all of this comes from a few bad debts that I had several years ago...I have just learned the ropes.
