Rental Scams at Craigslist targeting those seeking homes

Fraudsters operating at Craigslist are trying to con those who are seeking a dwelling on rent. In a recent incident, a lady seeking rented accomodation in Juneau, Alaska was almost duped by scammers who pretended to be owners of a property there.
When she responded to an ad on Craigslist, fraudsters asked her to make a deposit and for some personal information to be sent via email. Keys to the home, they promised, would be sent to her as soon as she did as told.
The lady was saved from being conned when she decided to physically verify the offer made by the fraudsters. She was surprised to find the listed property happily occupied by owners who had no clue that someone had put ads offering their house for rent.
Craigs list Rental Scam now spreading wide
These scams should now be seen as a common ploy adopted by fraudsters. They take down particulars of homes listed for sale at online auction sites and use it to offer the same place for rent elsewhere.
Correspondence with prospects are often done entirely via emails. The email will claim they moved recently from their homes to wherever-they-are-now on missionary work. It will use flowery words and will tug at your heartstrings to cover the scam.
The scams have their origins usually in Nigeria. As is expected, they rarely ever mention their postal address. An early warning sign, in such a case, is a contact number posted in the ad carrying the Nigerian country code.
Apart from pouching the deposit, fraudsters also use information given away by victims to steal their money. If you handover your bank account info, they are capable of transferring money from this account into one of theirs. If you divulge your driving license or social security information, they use these to open credit accounts against your name and make purchases against the same. Ditto for credit card details.
A good rule against falling prey to scams at online auction sites is to only deal with local buyers and sellers. When renting homes, especially, it is a good idea to pay a visit to the offered space. This enables you to verify independently whether the offers are genuine or not.

I, too, received a completely bogus email in response to an ad placed on Craigslist. But I’ll never rent from someone I’ve never met in person anyway. Here’s the email I was sent:

I too got a copy of the email from Rev. Allison Marley regarding 93 The Queensway. Then to contact his wife Latisha Marley. What a scam! The pictures they sent were straight out of House & Home Magazine in Toronto. All they wanted was for me to promise to keep their home clean and tidy. And that they weren’t in it for the money. Ya Right!!!!

I have to say though that the poor english is an interesting device. I had to read the email four times before I realized that I was never going to get the apartment unless I forked over at least 1500 dollars.
This really burns me up. I can’t even imagine all the people that could have fallen for this. I wanted to tell the guy off, but I know it’s not worth it.
I hope there’s a special department in the FBI for these creeps.

I currently have two of these scams on the hook. They have provided me with their phone numbers (don’t know if they are legit or not) and even one has sent a photograph supposedly of him & his family. But I have no legally identity to report them to, it should not be hard to find them electronically. I have not sent any money. But does anyone know of a legal identity that would try to catch this person.

I too received a “scam” email reply when I expressed interest in a ridiculously low-priced home for rent for a friend of mine who is looking for a place.
After emailing, I googled the address and learned it is listed on several websites for twice as much from a seemingly legitimate source. I didn’t reply to the below because it was clearly fraudulent.
However, what would a person gain if the questions below were answered? He doesn’t ask for a social security number or bank account or money. Maybe this is the first step and if someone responds, then they ask for the confidential info?
I sound naive but I was curious if anyone had thoughts about that. Maybe someone can give bogus answers to him and find out the next step. Here is part of the email sent.

You can learn to detect these scams:watch out for poor or awkward English sentence structure, spelling, punctuation and wordiness - an attempt at sounding sophisticated and professional. Also the messages sound overly solicitous (polite).

This is easy to ignore. I wouldn’t trust anyone who sent an e-mail written that badly. The wording is done via an online translator and is not verified for proper english type grammar. No online translation is 100% accurate due to the differences in the sentence structure used in different languages.

I was just recently sent an email from a lady i had inquired about for a house rental.. So i googled the country code and it was from nigeria, then i googled scams from nigeria and found this webite, be aware!! This is the email, i instantly knew if it was too good to be true it probably is.. always remember that!!

I almost got scammed today on craigslist. They deleted the posting within minutes which seemed fishy. It’s amazing they are all so similar. I wonder how many people fall for it. It seems this needs to be made more common knowledge in the media as to warn the public. I know our better judgement should be enough of a guide, but I hate that people get duped by this bullshit.

It has a FOR RENT sign in the yard by a realty company and people are living in the house currently. This email told me that the home was ready to move in to. What a scam. Should I be worried that I sent along my home address and phone numbers….ugh. I hate this crap!

I was seeking for an apt to rent and here is the email i received. its definate that its a scam!

They are getting better at their English. My daughter was in contact with someone passing themselves off as the owner of a property for sale, saying not to call the agent. She sent me this email which smelled funny from the start. You have to appreciate how they are mixing things up. This one was “disabled” by an accident…not a missionary. Nice twist. The real estate agent confirmed that this was a scam.

I have been searching for an apartment in the DC/MD/VA area and I have come to the conclusion that I am done with Craigslist! Of the 6 inquiries that I made 5 came back with this all so familiar story!!! What the H—! Is there nothing that can be done? First off the english OMG! But this one, and I have received two like this, ask some really “red flag” questions. Do you smoke? okay I understand that one, do you drink? now you are loosing me. Do you work late night? Craigslist . Real Estate Rental Scam . Fraudulent Ads placed all over the USA . Scammer uses various aliases . IP Address 81.199.162.13 . Phone
numbers associate with this scam are 011-234-802-736-6566 and 011-234-803-080-9184 . Email address associated with it is [email protected] .
Internet searches of the phone numbers will yeild additional email addresses and aliases . In this particular case it appears as though they are
using the name of a licensed Oregon Real Estate Broker . Gladys Blum .Fraud complaints have been forwarded to yahoo and the ISP associated with
the scam.
Here is the scam email i recieved when inquiring about the property for rent :

I got the exact same email as Father Frank, Lindsey and Beverly above. He said his name was “Monte Piazza”. He said he had a 2 Bedroom condo in Illinois. He had me going until he asked for the wire transfer. Reading his first email a second time, I realized that he said I could “drive by” the property at my liesure, and to let him know when I was through. Huh?? Unbelievable - this guy thinks I am going to give him money then get the keys? Please! I actually went by this house and there were workers in it - so I was able to go in, which I think caught him by surprise. Then, when I told him I wanted to have my mom go in - he said no - send money first. Yeah - RIGHT! I am soooooo glad I found this site - all of these stupid letters from the weirdo’s are the same concept. Right down to the application. I did a bid for a portion of petroleum land sometimes ago in West Africa and fortunately I won the bidding so I have to move quickly down to Africa to have my company set up because I will still have to rabid for it in the next 10 years. I came over here with my wife, we both bought the house when we got married. As soon as we settle down here I had a thought of selling the house so I have to look for an agent, after getting one, we got a deal but later my wife advised against that. The following seems to be consistient in these scams and should raise a “Red Flag”
1) Landlord out of country
2) Reluctant to give phone number or make “Voice” contact
3) Poor english
4) anxious to get the money
5) Volenteers loads of personal information about thier job and family.
6) Like everyone else says “Seems too good to be true”
PS this is also a popular fraud on many listing services where they use the same tactics to try to sell large ticket items besides houses so be weary and good luck.

That tipped me off right there!! NO ONE SAYS “MAY I” . . . also, that was it. Only that one sentence.

I almost fell for this rental home until I checked on ZILLOW.COM and all the condos in the same building in San Diego at 700 FRONT ST were going for millons and I could rent it for $900!!!! Don’t fall for this one from CRAIGSLIST…

I almost just fell for the scam. It was from Craigslist Hawaii. Listing was: $900 / 2br - Monthly - Lovely, FURNISHED luxury apart. Downtown location, 2 beds 2 (Honolulu). It sounded too good to be true. I emailed “hillary brown” and I instantly got the same response that Lori got. It’s terrible!

can move in right away or secure it and move-in whenever you are ready, the
lease will start from when you move in. The lease is flexible, can be month
to month.
The rental will be done online via eBay, my husband and I now live in London
