EPPICard Scam Wants You to Pour Out Your Social Security Benefits Down its Throat!

In a first for phishing scams, a new scam targeting hundreds-and-thousands of Americans availing of child support and employment benefits was uncovered across the country last week.

The scam takes advantage of the fact that such benefits are beings disbursed through convenient services like the EPPICard and the EBT Card which require use of magnetic cards. It immediately puts at risk, residents of 15 states where such services are gratefully used. Overseas criminals, possibly Romanians, are thought to be behind the scam.

In Mississippi and Pennsylvania, it is holders of EPPICard who are being targeted (see Press Release, Attorney General’s Office and Pittsburgh Tribune-Review News Report). In Portage County and the rest of Ohio, it is the holders of Electronic Bank Transfer Cards who are under threat (see Record-Courier News Report).

Fraudsters are flooding the country with emails informing recipients their EPPI Card has been imposed with some restrictions. Here’s one version (together with all of its silly mistakes):

Dear EPPICard holder account,

The link in the email directs you to a site that looks identical to the official EPPICard website. It asks users to sink in their card number, security PIN number, and their Social Security Number.

The official site now carries a warning: it is reminding everyone that it never asks for such personal information from its members whether through SMS, email or through phone calls.

No one has been reported falling for the scam as yet. However, if you suspect losing your personal information to the scam or have any fresh information on it, please call the following numbers:

    Tonya Bolinger:

I received a text message on my cell phone - indiana number - that my eppi-card was suspended and to call 856-637-2463. When I did call, they wanted me to put in my credit card information. Of course I thought if my account was suspended, shouldn’t they already have my account number? So in checking on-line I discovered that is indeed a scam. By the way, I didn’t know what an eppicard was til I looked on line. I don’t even have one!

    Best wishes!

I received the same message as Tonya - I also live in Indiana. When I called they immediately asked for my credit card information. I didn’t know what an eppicard was either and I don’t have one. Seems pretty fishy to me.

    Indiana:

Got a similar text as Tonya. The phone number I was supposed to call was 732-276-2408. 732 is a central New Jersey area code. I didn’t know what the hell an Eppi-Card was either, but I knew I didn’t have one

    Eric:

just got a text message too….indiana number. the text read: Your EPPICard account is closed due to unusual activity, call us now at 8664036008. knew it was a scam instantly

    Leslie:

I just received the same kind of scam text message from Eppicard. I called they wanted Credit Card info so i hung up. I also did not know what an Eppicard was until i found this site after getting the text message.

It is horrible that you constantly have to be on your toes with anything and everything you get in email, text, etc.

    Chrissaun King:

I had the same thing happen to me Tonya just described. I was asleep until I got a text message that stirred me from my slumber. It said my eppi-card was expired an’ to call 919-636-5898. It asked for my personal card info, so I hung up an’ googled eppi-card, finding this and various sites explaining the phishing scam going on. I also do not own an eppi-card. People, be sharp, careful and aware.

8/7/08: I recv’d the following text msg. on my phone today (in Indiana):
    FRM: Eppicard Security
    SUBJ: AUTOMATIC NOTIFICATION
MSG: Your EPPICard account is closed due to unusual activity, call us now at 1-806-329-0142.
I checked online as to where area code 806 is (Texas), then when I did a Google search of “Eppicard,” where I ran across this website about scams.

we received a text message on our cell phone, there ought to be a way to penalize these crooks who use our cell phones and minutes!!!

    Erin:

The same thing happened to me tonight, I received a text message from “EPPICARD Security” that said my account was closed due to unusual activity, and to call a number with an 806 prefix. I was concerned, but I didn’t want to call until I was able to get some more information on what an EPPICard is. I’m glad to hear it is just a scam - hopefully no one will get hurt from this.

  12. 12
    Morgan:

I also received a Text Message from an Indiana text today stating:

    From: Eppicard Security
    Subject: AUTOMATIC NOTIFICATION
Your EPPICard account is closed due to unusual activity, call us now at 1-806-329-0142.

I’ve never heard of an Eppicard yet, so I assumed this was some scam. Thanks for this site! I did not respond or call.

  13. 13
    CHRISTINA:

I RECEIVED A TXT MESSAGE ON MY CELL PHONE (INDIANA) SAYING THAT THERE HAS BEEN UNUSUAL ACTIVITY ON MY ACCOUNT AND FOR MY PROTECTION I NEED TO CALL THAT TEXAS NUMBER THAT WAS PROVIDED FOR ME. I CALLED THE NUMBER AND THEY WANTED ME TO ENTER MY DEBIT OR CREDIT CARD INFO. I IMMEDIATEDLY SUSPECTED IT WAS A SCAM

  14. 14
    Stacey:

I received the same text (INDIANA)…does anyone know if there is a place to report this criminal activity? I received 5 text messages in 2 days and each time the number to call was different. I would like to know how they even got my cell phone and what I can do to stop them from texting me or report it to someone!

  15. 15
    Kimberly:

I got the same txt message but the phone number was different. 815-981-8913. I knew I didn’t have an Eppicard but wanted to check why I got the message. Didn’t call just searched the web.

  16. 16
    Sheryl:

I just received a text message (also, Indiana) from EppicardSecurity saying my EPPICard account is closed due to unusual activity; call us now at 1-866-459-6967.
I don’t have an EPPICard, never heard of one. I Googled the phone number but there was no match.

  17. 17
    Andrea:

I just received this same text message, and my friend received it conveniently weeks before. We, also, live in Indiana. I find it strange that many people receiving this message live in Indiana, and my friend and I actually go through the same cell phone company. Makes me wonder if it’s certain cell phone companies handing out our numbers. Just seemed a little convenient to me.

  18. 18
    Jerry:

I too recieved the same message. I called my provider to inquire on a security setting on my phone to block the send, but since the number was 1010100006 he obviously could not trace it. He advised that I contact my local police department. Not sure if that would help, unless the department recived enough complaints. Who do you think we can contact at a state level. Maybe contact the investigative reporter at one of the news stations. They are always looking for stories. I just had my provider block all incoming texts. I might turn it back on in a couple of weeks and see if I start recieving them again.

    Lisa:

    Just received a text
    FRM:EppicardSecurity
    SUBJ: AUTOMATIC NOTIFICATION
MSG: Your EPPICard account is closed due to unusual activity, call us now at 1.734.823.3833.

Glad I checked the web to learn this is happening to others in Indiana…never heard of the Eppicard and now I know it is phishy!!!

    Thanks for the info!

i have gotten 2 text messages asking me to call 818-392-8362 and 866-459-6967. I assumed it was a hoax but was going to look online about it anyway and they sent me a second message like 18 hrs later before i had a chance to check online with a different number and area code. very fishy

  22. 22
    Lou:

Receieved the same message to my cell phone about my EPPI account being closed due to unusual activity. I also had no clue what an EPPI card was supposed to be. Googling the number turned up nothing. I also suspected a scam as I don’t give my cell # on account info anywhere. I am also in IN. It seems whoever is doing this is hitting this area hard right now.

  23. 23
    Carolyn:

I received this message on my Text message and to call 734 823 3833 about the EPPI Security problem.
My Indiana number is a cell phone. I don’t have an EPPI account and checked online. Thanks for the information about such a scam.

    EPPICard Text Message Scam:

I can’t believe the scam artist can now use toll free numbers. Makes you wonder how many people got scammed so they can pay for it and if the people will even report it in fear of looking silly.

Ditto - Indiana Got the txt on Friday It said your eppicard account is closed due to unusual activity call us now at 866-459-6967. I knew it was a scam because I don’t have Eppicard - didn’t even know what it was.

Glad to see I wasn’t the only one. Sorry for the poor saps that don’t have the sense to check into this stuff.

    FRM: Eppicard Security
    SUBJ: AUTOMATIC NOTIFICATION
MSG: Your EPPICard account is closed due to unusual activity, call us now at 1-775-636-8542.
I checked online as to where area code 775 is (Reno, NV), then did a Google search of “Eppicard,” where I ran across this website about scams. Thanks so much for posting this - it gave me the reassurance NOT to follow thru by calling them.

Got the same today 8/12/08. Now I live on the west coast, but I still have an Indiana prefix on my cell. I agree with another person, this came to my cell phone and cost me $.20. Not much, but still pisses me off. Trying to figure out how I can mess with these people, not sure of how yet, any idea?

  33. 33
    Rhonda:

I am also from Indiana, and this is the message I received today regarding my Eppicard…that, by the way, I do not own.

    From: 1010100001
    FRM:EPPI_CARD
MSG: Your Eppi_Card services was suspended for suspicious activity, call us at 8037538126

I did call that number, and I just got a recording to leave a message at the tone. Just like the rest of you, I immediately went online to find out what the heck is an Eppi_Card.

  34. 34
    Rhonda:

Just googled the NPA-NXX 803-753, because that is the number from which I was called. According to Marigold Technology, there are only 6 Businesses and 4 Consumers that have been assigned 803-753. Sure wish I knew how to find out the names of the businesses and the consumers. I’d report them in a second.

    Idea Guy:

I too (Indiana) have received several of these texts. I just switched plans with Sprint, and all of a sudden I start getting these spam texts. I wonder if there is a connection?

These people probably bulk SMS from some web site to a certain area code. Is everyone in Indiana (317)?

Anyway, there is a way to fight back. These people are playing a nasty game, so I hold no reservations in making this suggestion. If everyone does it, they may get tired of their game and stop. When you call those numbers, a human ** operator answers, right? Call their number, but be sure to protect yourself by using caller id blocking (dial *67 before the number) or use Skype. When you get the person on the line, speak in a really soft voice so they have to turn their volume way up. Just for fun, you can sound interested in falling for their scam. When you have their full attention, either scream at the top of your lungs or better yet blow a whistle directly into the phone receiver. If enough people do this, they will eventually go deaf or get tired of the game and just quit. Enjoy!

** I use the term “human” loosely here

    Rhonda:

One more thing. I did a reverse look up on this number, and of course, it is unlisted. I did find out that the Provider is Time Warner Telecom out of Columbia, SC. I am wondering if it is just a coincidence that I have Time Warner Cable and Internet. I am sure that Time Warner has our home phone number, our cell phone number, and our e-mail address. Any employee of Time Warner can probably get that info. I am in no way accusing Time Warner employees of being behind this, but it was just a thought.

    @ Idea Guy…

    :) HaHa!

    Really enjoyed your suggestion.

On the flip side, however, I don’t think this will do any good - we will just have some fraudsters who are now also hard of hearing to contend with! :D

Thank You for dropping by and taking the time out to leave a comment…

    admin:

    @ Andrea, Rhonda, Jerry…

It is still a mystery how these fraudsters got your numbers.

Personally, I doubt whether your service providers have anything to do with this.

Since the fraudsters are internet based,it is most likely that they are getting the numbers online.

Does anybody remember giving away your mobile numbers at any place online?

On a personal level, I think the best one can do is to report the incident to your local police.

Jerry, I agree with you; once the local police receives enough number of complaints they will see the gravity of the problem and put their resources against these scammers!

Thank You ALL for dropping by and taking the time out to leave a comment…

    Best Wishes!

    Nellie:

I got the same text message as many others who posted here-”Your eppicard account was suspended due to suspicious activity, please call us immediately” and gave me a phone number.

I DO have an EppiCard account (Indiana uses it for their unemployment benefits, and I collect unemployment for several weeks each year due to my seasonal job), so I was concerned, but two red flags tipped me off — first, it wasn’t a toll-free number they listed, and second, it did not match any number listed on the back of my card. I never use this card for purchases; I only use it to transfer funds into my regular checking account. I knew nobody could possibly have my card information; I haven’t even taken it out of its hiding place in over a year. I immediately called EppiCard’s customer service line, had no problems accessing my account, and transferred all the money into my bank account. I’m confident that my money is safe. Now I’m just kind of annoyed.

At first I thought they were targeting EppiCard holders, but after reading these comments, I see that they’re sending them to whatever numbers they can get, and it’s just a coincidence that they actually reached one.

    EPPICard Text Message Scam:

@Idea Guy - The calls are automated (female voice) which ask you to punch in your info.

I would not do it with the *67 as they are services (used by bill collectors, law firms, etc.) that can unblock it so they can see your number.

We had it from AT&T some time ago but no longer use it as its expensive.

  44. 44

Just got this text myself. The call back number given was a Florida area code. I called it out of curiosity, but it’s entirely automated with no live sleeze-balls to yell at.

  45. 45
    Taylor:

This is ridiculous. I’m only 16 years old, and both myself and my 13 year old sister have received the text message proclaiming: “Your EPPICard account is closed due to unusual activity, please call us immediately at the toll free number: 1.727.388.9587″.
That these phishers are targeting kids our age is scary, because not all people our age know better than to NOT CALL THE NUMBER.

  46. 46
    Christine:

Okay guys, there in Houston now. I just received a text that read from EPPIC Subject: NOTIFICATION Your EPPICard account is closed due to unusual activity, please call us immediately at the toll free number. First problem with this is, this isn’t a toll free number - 1.727.388.9587 so I called from my place of business not my cell and sure thing, it was an automated voice asking for my account number. I didn’t know which account, and that is how I knew something was wrong. So, I googled EPPICard and here I am. Please be aware, I recently lost/stolen by wallet, so I am very cautious now.

I got one of these early this afternoon and figured it was a scam as I don’t have an EPPI card either and have never heard of it until now. Smarmy cretins and curses upon whoever handed out our cel phone numbers. I am in Texas.

    res:

I called my cell phone company about the texts. They reported it to their fraud department. I encourage everyone to do the same. You have to do something about this or it will continue to happen. and unfortunately people are falling for it.

    Idea Guy:

It’s just a matter of economics. Everything has a price. They’re probably pretty proud of themselves for coming up with a new scam. There is currently very little cost to them, so the economics are stacked in their favor. All they have to do is bulk SMS a message every few days and answer the calls as they come in. Worst case, they get what they want, and it’s easy. This just encourages them to do it again, and go for a bigger thrill next time. More and more people end up getting hurt. If we stand by and do nothing, this cancer of our society will just grow. Their plan has a flaw, and we found it. Let’s make the cost to them as high as we possibly can. If enough people actually do this, they’ll be afraid to answer their phones. It will crush their confidence if they are constantly worried about a loud noise. If only one or two people do it, it’s not going to be effective.

    Imagine That:

It’s great that everyone is chiming in and telling their stories of this happening and how it’s a scam. Great. Now let’s do something! We know it’s a scam, we don’t need any more stories to prove it. Now someone figure out how to report these scammers so we can put some muscle behind our frustration at this.

SOMEONE PLEASE POST THE BEST WAY TO REPORT THIS SO THEY CAN BE CAUGHT!

  53. 53
    Idea Guy:

Hmm, it’s an automated operator? There’s no way to press “0″ to get to a real person? Pity.

I suppose the only option now is to clog their phone lines by war dialing their numbers and leaving the phone off the hook for like an hour just to take up one of their lines so no one else can call in. Just be sure you aren’t paying long distance or anything. I wonder if you could do it through Skype or something? There are web sites that can prank call your friends. Use these services to tie up the lines. I can’t think of one now, but it’d be impossible to trace back to you, and you wouldn’t be paying long distance.

Or… if you have a lot of time on your hands, you can spam them back. Call them and give them bogus information about yourself. If they have to wade through thousands and thousands of fake SSN numbers, maybe they’ll get tired of it and give up. Strength in numbers.

I just got another text from them as I was typing this up, and it’s really starting to piss me off.

I’m going to complain to my mobile provider since they are letting this stuff through their network. I’m sure they have filters for this sort of thing. Maybe they can filter any text going to me with the word “Epicard” in it since I obviously don’t have an account?

The number is in So. Cal. near the US-Mexico boarder somewhere.

I do have an EppiCard account and did receive an email saying there have been too many attempts to logging in. I of course clicked on the link that it said to click on. I was dumb to click on it and they took over 1900 dollars out of my Eppi card. Please do not do the same as me. I clicked on it because I was having problems with my deposit so I thought I had typed in the wrong password previously and not remembered. They left me with 10 dollars in my account and I needed to pay my rent for that month and needed to borrow money. Please do not pay attention to those emails. I called after I realized it and the lady told me that they DO NOT SEND OUT EMAILS NOR TEXTS!!

Dont be as dumb as me :-(

Please warn people that banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions already have your personal info. Even the IRS DOES NOT solicite over the phone. When consumers receive messages, they usually panic and react. Obviously they don’t want to get in trouble. Please Please keep in mind companies won’t contact you by phone asking for personal info. Check your credit info and personal accounts often. The 3 major bureaus will let you put a freeze on your personal info. Anymore questions call your local authorities and turn any of these numbers over to them. Home scams include getting senior citizens info and redirecting their personal monthly money to other accounts. Warn them also. Good luck

I would like to hear from anyone who has had trouble with their eppicard, especially those getting their child support payments through these cards.

I was recently ripped off for $4,000.00 and of course the eppicard company did nothing to assist me. They promptly denied my claim of fraudulent use and refused to give me my money back. I even had proof that it was not me. They told me that they contacted the merchants and the merchants told them the charges were legit. I called the same merchants and they told me eppicard never contacted them.

The people at eppicard are liars and thieves. We need to all get to together to stop this company from issueing these card. This is going to keep going and going if someone does not stop them. It is bad enough that someone has stolen our money but it is even worse when the card company does not honor the policy on the card agreement. Please contact me at [email protected]

I just happened to stumble upon this website. I can’t believe people are so col. I have an eppicard - my children’s child support from the court goes on it. People stealing from children. HOW LOW CAN YOU GO!!!!!!!!!!!
Last year someone hacked into my computer and identified themselves as Microsoft. They told me that I had to give them my bank acct.#, S.S.#, and my pin# for their files, if I didn’t comply, they would shut me down…I refused, they shut me down. Caused me all kinds of problems to get my computer fixed….but….I still had my money :) An old lady once told me, “I’m too old of a cat to be called a kitten.”

Don’t give out any, “ANY” information over the computer.

Call the number on the back of the card with any questions you have.

I can not believe that the last 2 days i have been receiving the same kind of text messages. So has my husband on his phone. We live in Ohio and do not even have the card. I, like many others, actually had to google it and find out what the hell it was. I even call the company to tell them what was going on. They thanked me for telling them but didn’t even ask any of the details. Apparently this has been going on for at least 2 years now. I wish there was some way to actually report them to some one like you can when you come across a false add. Luckily for me i didn’t fall for it, (because i don’t have that card) but i could easily see how some one could. Its a shame that the company is not interested in protecting their clients. If this scam has been going on this long apparently no one has successfully figured out a way to stop them and they are making a good living.

I just got a text message that says I need to call immediately due to recent activity. I don’t even have an eppicard. How did these people get my number? I will not respond to this email. I don’t trust it!

Just got a SMS: “Message from EPPICard. Please call 1-877-549-3573 immediately about recent account activity. Thank you.”

I don’t have an EPPICard either.

2 years later and we are still receiving these text messages. How can we stop this?
