When Fake FBI Agents Come Calling…

Police in Newton, Sussex County (NJ) are warning residents to be wary of fraudsters who can come calling posing as FBI agents. The calls are made to those who had earlier responded to a Nigerian scam email sent by the same scammers seeking help to cash checks.
To these people, the fraudsters would call up posing as FBI agents. They would claim they had been monitoring their phone lines and now had evidence to prove they were part of an organized online scam. The evidence will be enough to frame a case that could lead to confiscation of their house, car and other belongings, the fraudsters would threaten.
At this point, they offer a way out. The poor victims could wiggle out if they wire out some money, $999 namely, to a secret location specified by the agents. If they comply, the agents will take steps to suppress the case.
As is apparent, the whole thing is a setup. Those who do fall for the offer will be giving away their precious money to a bunch of unscrupulous crooks. The case and the inquiry are only props of an act to draw money out of poor folks.
Hilariously, the report cited one incident that shows up the fraudsters themselves to be desperate:
When a recent would-be victim told the caller that she didn’t have $999, the fraudulent FBI agent told her that she could send $399 instead.
Sounds like a street mugger prodding “Gimme ’atever you have”?
In a statement, Police summed up the scam:
Residents are cautioned not to send any money to individuals who misrepresent themselves as agents of the FBI for any reason because it is clearly a scam designed to scare victims into paying the actors. Under no circumstance would an FBI agent request payment due to an investigation.
